About the Mentor
Ryanne Murcia was born in the province of Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay in the southern Philippine island of Mindanao in 1991. In 2014, she graduated at Ateneo de Zamboanga University with a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication. And in 2018 she became an alumna of the Platform Busan at the Busan International Film Festival in South Korea.
Murcia is a writer-director and acting coach from Zamboanga. Her filmography includes the award-winning short films Entre Medio del Fin, Apasol, and No Ama Conmigo. In 2014 she won the Best Actor Award for her performance in Apasol at the Mindanao Film Festival.
Murcia began her career as an acting coach on 2016 working with a full cast of Tausug first-time actors for the film Women of the Weeping River by Sheron Dayoc. The film won numerous awards including performances awards for actors. Laila Ulao won Best Actress awards at the Asean-China Film Festival, QCinema International Film Festival, and the Young Critic’s Circle. Mdm. Sharifa Pearlsia Ali-Dans won Best Supporting Actress at the Gawad Urian, Taha Daranda won Best Supporting Actor at QCinema International Film Festival, and Mariam Zimadar Caranay was nominated Best Actress at the Gawad Urian.
She continued coaching first-time actors in the regions collaborating with short films such as Astri Maka Si Tambulah by Xeph Suarez (Astri, a Badjao trans woman, nominated for Best Actress at the Mindanao Film Festival), Hondo by Aedrian Araojo, Siyudad sa Bulawan by Jarell Serencio, and Excuse Me, Miss, Miss, Miss by Sonny Calvento.
On 2019, Murcia collaborated with first-time film director Arden Condez for his film John Denver Trending where she coached a 14-year old first-time actor Jansen Magpusao who won his first Balanghai as Best Actor at the Cinemalaya 2019.
Murcia is the Festival Director of Festival de Cine Paz Mindanao. She is working as part-time faculty at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University. And the youngest recipient of the Outstanding Ipileño Award for Excellence in Art (Film), given by the Municipality of Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay, where she comes from.
