These rituals and pastimes, she notes, are often tagged as \u201ctraditional.\u201d \u201cBut to put what is now a set of largely recreational\u2026activities in the category of \u2018traditional,\u2019\u201d she writes, \u201cmasks a complex past defined by dramatic change in law, custom, and practice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brock, who teaches history at the University of Alabama, focuses mostly on the Progressive Era (from the 1890s into the 1930s), when those changes were most dramatic, and tracks three historical figures through them: John H. Wallace, Jr., the architect of Alabama\u2019s game and fish laws, who fused his conservation ethics with a virulent strain of racism; Charlie Young, a hunting guide in Georgia\u2019s Red Hills region who observed the rise of the elite sportsman in the South (often a Northern industrialist) and the related advent of the \u201chunting plantation\u201d; and Fannye A. Cook, a scientist, teacher, and friend of Eudora Welty\u2019s who made protecting her native Mississippi\u2019s wildlife her life\u2019s work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That the state of Mississippi had only a few more bears in all its woods than Memphis\u2019s Peabody Hotel had ducks in its lobby is just one data point to show why game laws were needed. Another: In 1906, as John Wallace was struggling to convince Alabamians of the merits of hunting regulations, he estimated that market hunters were shipping half a million Alabama quail to out-of-state restaurants. The passenger pigeon was less than a decade from extinction. \u201cWe have a strong tendency,\u201d as the writer and hunter Jim Harrison once put it, \u201cto act the weasel in the hen house.\u201d<\/p><div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1401171\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad mobile inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1250214\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad tablet inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-9493350\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad desktop inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p>But some Southerners, then as now, were skeptical of centralized regulation. \u201cToo much law and not enough liberty,\u201d as one Mississippian protested hunting statutes. While Wallace successfully appealed to his fellow Alabamians\u2019 better angels, evangelizing for clean water and protected habitat and the ethics of fair chase, he also appealed to their baser natures by promoting game laws\u2014which determined who was allowed to hunt and where\u2014to fortify the racial caste system. In 1912, five years after Alabama enacted its first game and fish laws, Wallace boasted that \u201cthe great army of pot-hunters and negroes that at one time patrolled the state, in quest of game, has practically been disarmed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s just one component of the \u201ccomplex past\u201d Brock was referring to above. Over the years, game and fish laws exposed other fault lines: between rich and poor, landed and landless, utilitarians and mutualists, bird hunters and bird-watchers. In her afterword, Brock quotes Durrell Smith, a Georgia hunting guide and dog trainer who founded the Minority Outdoor Alliance in 2020: \u201cIt wasn\u2019t just enough to say, \u2018The outdoors are for everyone.\u2019 Okay, great. But what does that actually mean?\u201d Game laws, like environmental laws, have served as tethers between the natural world and the political arena, and as with all matters political, power and access have held sway. Only by understanding the history of hunting and the politics that shaped it, Brock suggests, can we come to \u201can open season to reimagine the field.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-culture-for-dinner\"><strong>Culture for Dinner<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Flavors and stories simmer in a new cookbook<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"868\" height=\"1100\" src=\"https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GG0325_Books_02-868x1100.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-214600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GG0325_Books_02-868x1100.jpg 868w, https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GG0325_Books_02-237x300.jpg 237w, https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GG0325_Books_02-768x974.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GG0325_Books_02-947x1200.jpg 947w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 868px) 100vw, 868px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>T hree is a magic number for the food historian Jessica B. Harris. In her gorgeous new cookbook, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/1939\/9780593139776\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Braided Heritage: Recipes and Stories on the Origin of American Cuisine<\/a><\/em> (Clarkson Potter), she weaves together a trio of major culinary influences: Native American, European, and African, plus many subgroups within them. \u201cEach brought much to the bubbling cauldron of cultures that would spawn the nation\u2019s food,\u201d she writes. \u201cThe result, as we all know, is savory and varied indeed.\u201d She peppers in words from her many food-world friends and beyond, threading in colorful photography and recipes to prove her tasty points: venison stew seasoned with mushrooms;
