He would know\u2014he\u2019s grown roses on the West Coast, in Miami, and now in upstate South Carolina through his rose-centric <a href=\"https:\/\/paulzimmermanroses.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">landscape consulting business<\/a>. Moist conditions can lead to black spot, a fungal disease that plagues many types of roses and their would-be growers, who often turn to spraying in frustration. This old garden rose\u2014which preceded the hybrid tea rose created in 1867\u2014was popular in the mid- to late 1800s. In his own garden, a favorite modern shrub is the mauve-colored<strong> Petite Prince<\/strong>. He also favors the more recently created <strong>Big Ben<\/strong> as well as the <strong>James L. Austen <\/strong>rose. And he advises keeping an eye on two no-spray trials that run in the United States called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americangardenroseselections.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Gardens Rose Selections<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanrosetrialsforsustainability.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Rose Trials for Sustainability<\/a>. They do, however, like full sun, so keep that in mind, too.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-give-a-new-rose-time-nbsp\"><strong>Give a new rose time.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen a child first goes to school, they seem to catch everything, but then they build up their immunities,\u201d Zimmerman says. Roses are like that, too\u2014as a rule of thumb, he gives a new rose two or three years to settle into a climate and garden. \u201cIf your rose has black spot for the first three months, just give it time. But if it has black spot after three years, it\u2019s time to get a shovel.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ask-for-help-nbsp\"><strong>Ask for help.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Botanical gardens in your area can be a great source of inspiration and knowledge, Zimmerman says, but with a catch\u2014ask them if they spray. \u201cThat\u2019s the key to the whole thing.\u201d If they don\u2019t, their varieties will likely work well for you, too.
