The historic high-rise first opened in 1906 and was most recently a retirement home; this spring, after extensive renovations, it\u2019s set to return as a seventy-three-room showstopper. The property\u2019s developer and manager, Ash, is known for what it calls the \u201ccinematic style\u201d of its outposts in New Orleans, Baltimore, Detroit, and Providence, Rhode Island. Cofounder and CEO Ari S. Heckman said rooms at Shenandoah Mansions resemble well-appointed bedrooms where \u201cguests should feel \u2018in-residence\u2019 rather than transient visitors.\u201d And its caf\u00e9 and bar are designed to appeal to locals as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This spring makes a great time to visit as Richmond marks the 250th anniversary of Patrick Henry\u2019s \u201cGive Me Liberty or Give Me Death\u201d speech, which was delivered at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historicstjohnschurch.org\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Historic St. John\u2019s Church<\/strong><\/a> in the Church Hill neighborhood. Stop by the <a href=\"http:\/\/virginiahistory.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Virginia Museum of History &amp; Culture<\/strong><\/a> to learn how the patriot\u2019s words changed history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>G&amp;G tip:<\/strong> St. John\u2019s Church is a short stroll to cozy <strong>Libby Hill Park<\/strong>. Visit the overlook for a panorama that gave Virginia\u2019s capital its name because it reminded the city\u2019s founder of a view of Richmond Upon Thames, a leafy London borough.
