{"id":209239,"date":"2025-03-25T10:09:28","date_gmt":"2025-03-25T14:09:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/?p=209239"},"modified":"2025-03-25T10:09:41","modified_gmt":"2025-03-25T14:09:41","slug":"pitch-in-to-save-the-okefenokee-swamp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/articles\/pitch-in-to-save-the-okefenokee-swamp","title":{"rendered":"Pitch in to Save the Okefenokee Swamp"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Where: <\/strong>Folkston, Fargo, and Waycross, Georgia\u2014the three entrances to the refuge<br><strong>When: <\/strong>year-round<br><strong>If you like: <\/strong>conservation, sports and the outdoors <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why you should go:<\/strong> The word <em>Okefenokee <\/em>is thought to have originated from the Miccosukee-Seminole term for \u201ctrembling earth,\u201d and indeed, as you paddle or putt through the <a href=\"http:\/\/okeswamp.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Okefenokee Swamp<\/strong><\/a>, the largest blackwater wetland ecosystem on the continent, which floats on the border of Georgia and Florida, the ferns and lilies over the tea-colored water and even the soft, peaty islands themselves quiver around you. In this preserved paradise, 350 species of reptiles (alligators and indigo snakes), birds (great blue herons and red-cockaded woodpeckers), and mammals (black bears and Seminole bats) live among the pines and cypresses. Amazingly, there are no invasive species here. \u201cIt\u2019s the closest experience you\u2019ll get to what earth was like before humans touched it,\u201d says Faythe Hall, a director at the nonprofit <a href=\"https:\/\/okeswamp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Okefenokee Swamp Park &amp; Adventures<\/strong><\/a>, through which visitors can take guided tours or rent kayaks, canoes, camping gear, and johnboats to explore the swamp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But outside forces are threatening: A proposed titanium dioxide mine on the southeastern edge of the refuge imperils the wetland\u2019s sanctity. Conservation organizations, legislators, and locals are working hard to stop it, with measures that include a potential boundary expansion and a push to become Georgia\u2019s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. \u201cWe\u2019re at a critical moment in time,\u201d Hall says, urging those who wish to help to call their Georgia legislators or donate to organizations working to protect the swamp, like the Georgia River Network and the Georgia Conservancy. \u201cIf we don\u2019t take steps forward as a community to preserve and protect the swamp, we\u2019re in danger of losing it\u2014and people\u2019s voices are the strongest tools we have.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>G&amp;G tip:<\/strong> The Okefenokee is a certified Dark Sky Park, and half of its animal residents flourish at night.
