In the 1996 film <em>Waiting for Guffman<\/em>, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=801Yrh8T0fI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">employs another version of the region\u2019s dialect with much success<\/a>. Isaacs, on the other hand, hails from Liverpool, England, and allegedly based his character on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bravotv.com\/southern-charm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Southern Charm<\/a><\/em>\u2019s Thomas Ravenel and a local Durham politician. It\u2019s my vowels.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p><div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3341692\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad mobile inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1772026\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad tablet inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1497522\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad desktop inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p>We sat down with Wolfram to dissect where the actors got it right and where they got it wrong.&nbsp;<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-1-vowels-nbsp\"><strong>1. Vowels&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe flew over the North Pohhhwl,\u201d Posey says in her first line of dialogue in the show, dragging out each vowel in a honeyed drawl, with her nostrils pinched and her mouth downturned\u2014a facial expression just as exaggerated as the sounds coming out. A common characteristic of a general Southern dialect is \u201cfronted u\u2019s and o\u2019s,\u201d which Posey employs heavily in the show, projecting them from the front of her mouth like she\u2019s holding her nose (though that may be more an allusion to her character\u2019s snootiness than anything else).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see it in the way she says Duke, for example. One of the (many, many) conflicts among the fictional Ratliff family is whether the youngest son will attend Duke University or UNC Chapel Hill next year. According to Wolfram, her pronunciation actually nods to a common stereotype about the two schools. \u201cChapel Hill is a regional university, and lots of kids come into Chapel Hill speaking with Southern dialects,\u201d he says. Currently at Duke, about 85 percent of the students are out of state. \u201cAt one point there was a chant the Chapel Hill kids would say, in which they would pronounce the word Duke as a Northerner. <em>Dook<\/em> rather than <em>Dewk<\/em>. It was a subtle parody insinuating that Duke is really a Northern school. So when Parker Posey says \u2018Duke,\u2019 she has that nice front vowel.\u201d Just like a born and bred Tarheel would.&nbsp;<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p><div id=\"div-gpt-ad-8736164\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad mobile inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-6905978\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad tablet inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-6368192\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad desktop inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-2-regionalism\"><strong>2. Regionalism<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For Isaacs, the fronted vowel should also come naturally, as it\u2019s something British English shares with Southern English. Wolfram thinks he generally has it down (though his accent sometimes leans a little Aussie to viewers\u2019 ears, drifting more towards Sydney than Charlotte). \u201cThere are five or six different Southern dialects in North Carolina,\u201d Wolfram says, and nearly endless variations within each, and he admits Isaacs hasn\u2019t <em>quite<\/em> nailed the specificity of Durham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stick with us if you\u2019re into this sort of thing: A stereotypical Southern accent involves \u201cunglided\u201d vowels\u2014when a diphthong (a combination of two vowels in a single syllable) becomes a monophthong (one vowel). It\u2019s why in Southern Appalachia, for instance, time may be pronounced <em>tahm<\/em>. \u201cThe problem is that in the Piedmont, where Durham is situated, they have a different version of the \u2018I\u2019 rule than they do elsewhere,\u201d Wolfram says. \u201cSo for example, in Durham they say <em>tahm<\/em> for time, but they say <em>white<\/em> for white. Though not in vogue today, for a wealthy, Southern, urban, white woman, it\u2019s not entirely far-fetched. \u201cIn an urban context, r-lessness has a connotation of upper class,\u201d Wolfram says. \u201cThough most people from these areas&nbsp;who would talk like this would be at least in their later seventies\u2014a bit older than Posey.\u201d (But why would the show <em>evah <\/em>let such a technicality get in the way of good fun?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take Martha Pearl Villas, for instance, an upper-class Charlottean who was born in 1916, whom Wolfram and his team have studied as an example of how many aristocratic women spoke in Southern cities in the late twentieth century:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"video-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MFfM2GMr3lI?si=6HZPR5ZntF3t1tq9&amp;start=162\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Wolfram also points to the clip as an example of generational trends in speech. \u201cYounger people in urban areas are now using their r\u2019s, and it\u2019s actually Southern rural people who don\u2019t say their r\u2019s,\u201d he says. \u201cIf [Posey\u2019s character was from] a rural area, she would be socially stigmatized. It shows you it\u2019s not ever about the dialects, it\u2019s about the people who represent the dialects.\u201d&nbsp;<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-4-character-acting-nbsp\"><strong>4. Character Acting&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For Posey and Isaacs, the people they\u2019re trying to represent are parodies of egregiously behaving, unrelatable socialites. Posey\u2019s character pops Lorazepam like they\u2019re breath mints\u2014which, now that you mention it, may contribute to her slurred drawl. \u201cAs an actor, what you\u2019re going for is not to get everything right, but you\u2019re going for salient features that people will notice,\u201d Wolfram says. \u201cPosey does come across as privileged, so the effect of her accent projects what she\u2019s trying to do.\u201d<\/p><div id=\"div-gpt-ad-2374205\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad mobile inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1151168\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad tablet inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-2079830\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad desktop inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Still not convinced? That\u2019s okay. Just as her <em>Guffman<\/em> co-star Catherine O\u2019Hara elevated <em>Schitt\u2019s Creek<\/em>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iyMrBdyrusY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Moira Rose<\/a> into a larger-than-life caricature, Posey in particular might just be employing elongated, unglided vowels and saccharine r-lessness to transcend time, place\u2014and perhaps logic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One X user summed it up perfectly: \u201cParker Posey\u2019s accent in #WhiteLotus is beyond good or bad. It is a character unto itself. It\u2019s like modern art. You may not fully understand what\u2019s happening, but you respect that some things in the universe are meant to remain a mystery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Parker Posey\u2019s accent in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/WhiteLotus?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#WhiteLotus<\/a> is beyond good or bad.
