In her latest,<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/1939\/9780593803486\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Three Days in June<\/a><\/em>, the central family is uncharacteristically small: mom, dad, and adult daughter, or three people in June. The emotional terrain the eighty-three-year-old Tyler covers, however, is anything but small. Beneath the tidy crust of her plainsong sentences, as ever, seethes the lava of familial and marital relations: regret, fear, resentment, surrender, wounds healed and unhealed with more, inevitably, yet to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bare plot summary threatens to evoke one of those Hollywood dramedies that might have starred Meryl Streep and Alec Baldwin back in the day: A couple long divorced is thrown back together, by comically awkward happenstance, at the wedding of their only daughter. Tyler is too deep and nimble a writer, of course, to skate dramedy grooves, though much of her droll banter would shine in a screenplay; she ballasts <em>Three Days in June<\/em> with the hard weight of life. (Not for nothing did she major in Russian literature at Duke.) The familiar setting is Baltimore\u2019s leafy Roland Park neighborhood\u2014where \u201ceverybody has a last name for a first name,\u201d as a character quipped in an earlier novel\u2014which Tyler has mapped as thoroughly over the course of her career as Updike surveyed his Tarbox or Proust his Combray. (Tyler could be called one of Baltimore\u2019s artistic aldermen, sharing oversight of the city with John Waters, David Simon, and Barry Levinson.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our narrator is Gail Simmons (no relation, we assume, to the<em> Top Chef<\/em> star), a sixty-one-year-old private school administrator whose lack of \u201cpeople skills\u201d has abruptly cost her her job on the day of her daughter\u2019s wedding rehearsal. The indictment is less than just, as is her mother\u2019s contention that Gail doesn\u2019t \u201chave a romantic bone in her body,\u201d but it\u2019s true Gail possesses a vinegary streak. \u201cI\u2019ve never been the type to play back scenes from my past,\u201d she confides. \u201cAt most a single unexpected moment might pop up\u2026 and I would think,<em> Oh, that<\/em>. Or,<em> Oh! That!<\/em> if it really took me by surprise. And then I turned my eyes away from it and thought about something else.\u201d Sentiment, then, is to be brushed aside. To stave off tears during the wedding vows, she invokes memories of her daughter\u2019s irritating teenage habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tyler\u2019s 2009 novel,<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/1939\/9780345516596\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Noah\u2019s Compass<\/a><\/em>, also kicked off with a sixty-one-year-old private school employee losing a job; similarly, the unwanted cat that Gail inherits from her ex-husband might be cousin to the cats that went sashaying into characters\u2019 lives in<em> French Braid<\/em> (2022) and <em>Ladder of Years<\/em> (1995). I venture this not to carp but to illustrate a point: that since 1964, Tyler has been continually working and reworking the elements of her fiction, both small and large, in pursuit of a single but multifaceted vision. Best to liken her, perhaps, to Claude Monet, who painted and repainted his haystacks because the light and the seasons played differently upon them every time. Likewise, George Sand\u2019s contention that each of Honor\u00e9 de Balzac\u2019s books was in fact a page of one great book might well be applied to Anne Tyler. From Roland Park, she\u2019s spun an entire universe.<\/p><div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1680158\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad mobile inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-2601653\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad tablet inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-9137508\" class=\"ad-container in-line-ad desktop inContent\" data-ad-size-mapping=\"inContent\" data-ad-path=\"\/68000349\/in-between-modules\" data-ad-sizes=\"[ [336, 280], [300, 250], [300, 50] ]\" data-ad-channel=\"\" data-ad-type=\"In-between Modules\" data-page-terms=\"flagged\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p>Much happens in the corner of that universe that<em> Three Days in June<\/em> occupies. The wedding comes close to derailment; Gail is compelled to reveal to her daughter the secret cause of the divorce; and, forced to share her home with her ex-husband and his tagalong rescue cat, Gail finds herself finally confronting that secret and her own life\u2019s derailment. \u201cWere we simply going to carry on as usual, then?\u201d she asks at one point. \u201cAs if nothing whatsoever had happened?\u201d As Tyler shows, that\u2019s often the only way forward in family life. It\u2019s also the source of the unexpectedly heart-busting poignancy at the novel\u2019s close. Are families absolutely, intrinsically interesting? Updike asked. Anne Tyler\u2019s are. In the zippy <em><a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/1939\/9781668064214\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Food for Thought<\/a><\/em> (Gallery Books),<em> Good Eats<\/em> star Alton Brown also dips into memories\u2014baking biscuits with his Georgia grandmother; a chicken-roasting ritual; savory Food Network gossip. And in <a href=\"https:\/\/bookshop.org\/a\/1939\/9781643262178\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Bad Naturalist<\/em><\/a> (Timber Press), <a href=\"https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/articles\/in-ibad-naturalist-i-a-virginia-writer-gets-a-humbling-crash-course-in-ecology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paula Whyman<\/a> charmingly rides the emotional coaster of land ownership in western Virginia: \u201cI had, I admit, a rather pie-in-the-sky view of how I\u2019d reshape the mountain into\u2026a meadow that would inspire Julie Andrews to break into song.
