{"id":208427,"date":"2025-03-25T10:10:40","date_gmt":"2025-03-25T14:10:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/?p=208427"},"modified":"2025-03-25T10:10:48","modified_gmt":"2025-03-25T14:10:48","slug":"journey-through-american-history-at-the-legacy-sites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/gardenandgun.com\/articles\/journey-through-american-history-at-the-legacy-sites","title":{"rendered":"Journey Through American History at the Legacy Sites"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Where: <\/strong>Montgomery, Alabama<br><strong>When: <\/strong>year-round<br><strong>If you like: <\/strong>history<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why you should go:<\/strong> Nestled between a bucolic bend of the Alabama River and active railroad tracks built by enslaved Black people in the nineteenth century, Montgomery\u2019s <strong>Freedom Monument Sculpture Park<\/strong> opened last year as the third stop in what is known as the <a href=\"http:\/\/legacysites.eji.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Legacy Sites<\/strong><\/a>. Each is powerful on its own; taken together, they represent arguably the nation\u2019s most immersive and affecting reckoning with its racist history. One $5 ticket gets you admission to the <strong>National Memorial for Peace and Justice<\/strong>, a visually arresting tribute to the 4,400-plus victims of racial terror lynchings; the <strong>Legacy Museum<\/strong>, which transformed the site of a former cotton warehouse into a comprehensive study of slavery in America; and the sculpture park, which pairs historical relics like chains and a whipping post with soaring modern art. \u201cSomething as challenging as the history of slavery needs to be balanced by something uplifting,\u201d says Bryan Stevenson, executive director of the <strong>Equal Justice Initiative <\/strong>(EJI), the legal advocacy and human rights nonprofit that operates the sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stevenson personally designed the sculpture park\u2019s centerpiece: the <strong>National Monument to Freedom<\/strong>, which honors the five million emancipated Black people who adopted surnames in the census of 1870. Those names\u2014some 122,000 of them\u2014are inscribed on the monument, offering a Vietnam Wall\u2013like space for reflection and connection. \u201cEven though I was there every day when we were building it, when I saw my name and was able to touch it, it just moved me to tears,\u201d Stevenson says. \u201cIt was such a deeply personal moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>G&amp;G tip: <\/strong>Visiting all three Legacy Sites is \u201ca full-day experience,\u201d Stevenson says. He recommends starting at the Legacy Museum, eating lunch at the on-site soul-food spot <a href=\"http:\/\/panniegeorgeskitchen.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Pannie-George\u2019s<\/strong><\/a>, and taking the free shuttle to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. From there you can take another shuttle to a boat launch (both of which are free), which will allow you to approach the sculpture park as many enslaved people arrived in Montgomery\u2014by river. (During summer, he suggests saving the air-conditioned museum for the afternoon.)
